The blind leading the blind, Dust-scape

NL – Deze sculptuur is een van de eerste werken uit Peter Buggenhouts reeks ‘The Blind Leading the Blind’. De titel verwijst naar Pieter Bruegels beroemde schilderij ‘De parabel van de blinden’ uit de 16de eeuw. Net zoals de blinden in dit schilderij, die elkaar blindelings volgen, weet volgens Buggenhout ook vandaag niemand waar hij vandaan komt of naartoe gaat. Zijn sculpturale constructies verwijzen dan ook naar de onmogelijkheid om de werkelijkheid op een alomvattende manier te begrijpen. Ze zijn even complex als onze dagelijkse realiteit en bieden geen vast perspectief op die realiteit, noch op zichzelf. Dit werk is nog relatief bescheiden van formaat. Recentere versies zijn vaak veel monumentaler. Buggenhout presenteert dergelijke ‘dustscapes’ (stoflandschappen) veelal op een geïmproviseerde sokkel. Daarmee maakt hij duidelijk dat het om een sculptuur gaat, een object dat alleen op zichzelf bestaat en ook enkel naar zichzelf verwijst. Het is niet meer dan een ding dat geen enkele externe realiteit of inhoud symboliseert. De sculptuur bestaat uit een amalgaam van materialen, zoals bouw- en industrieel afval, dat werd bedekt met huishoudstof. Stof is voor de kunstenaar zelf betekenisloos: ze bestaat louter uit resten. Toch is stof in staat om objecten van gedaante te doen veranderen door hun vorm in die mate te benadrukken dat hun kleur en kernmateriaal vervagen. Buggenhouts assemblages groeien geleidelijk, van binnenuit, als accumulaties van materialen en stof. Ze lijken wel archeologische sporen uit een verre, postindustriële toekomst.

ENG - This sculpture is one of the first works in Peter Buggenhout’s series ‘The Blind Leading the Blind’. The title refers to Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s famous painting ‘The Parable of the Blind’, which dates from the sixteenth century. Like the blind in the painting, who unseeingly follow each other, Buggenhout asserts that people today do not know where they come from or where they are heading. His sculptural constructions therefore reference the fact that we will never attain a definitive understanding of the world we inhabit. His works are as complex as everyday life and offer no fixed perspective on this actuality, nor on themselves. This particular work is still relatively modest in size. More recent iterations tend to be much more monumental. Buggenhout often presents such ‘dustscapes’ on improvised plinths. In so doing, he makes it obvious that the work is a sculpture, an entirely self-referential and autonomous object. It is nothing more than a thing; an artefact that does not symbolise any external reality or subject. The sculpture is made from an amalgam of materials, such as building and industrial waste, which has been covered with household dust. For the artist, the dust is a meaningless substance: it only consists of particles. Yet dust can alter an object’s shape by emphasising its form to such an extent that the colour and core material dissipate. Buggenhout’s assemblages slowly emerge from within, as accumulations of materials and dust. They resemble archaeological traces from a distant, post-industrial future.

FR - Cette sculpture est l'une des premières œuvres de la série 'The Blind Leading the Blind' de Peter Buggenhout. Le titre fait référence au célèbre tableau de Pieter Bruegel datant du XVIe siècle, 'La parabole des aveugles'. Tout comme les aveugles de ce tableau, qui se suivent aveuglément les uns les autres, Peter Buggenhout estime que personne ne sait aujourd'hui d'où il vient ni où il va. Ses constructions sculpturales font ainsi référence à l'impossibilité d'appréhender la réalité de manière intégrale. Elles sont tout aussi complexes que notre réalité quotidienne et n'offrent pas de perspective fixe sur cette réalité, ni sur elles-mêmes. Cette œuvre est de taille relativement modeste. Les versions plus récentes sont souvent beaucoup plus monumentales. Buggenhout présente ces 'dustscapes' (paysages de poussière) souvent sur un socle improvisé. Ce faisant, il indique clairement qu'il s'agit d'une sculpture, d'un objet qui n'existe qu'en lui-même et qui ne renvoie qu'à lui-même. Ce n'est rien d'autre qu'une chose qui ne symbolise ni réalité ni contenu extérieur. La sculpture est composée d'une accumulation de matériaux divers, tels que des déchets de construction et des déchets industriels, qui furent recouverts de poussière domestique. Pour l'artiste, la poussière est dénuée de sens: il ne s'agit que de restes. Pourtant, celle-ci parvient à transformer les objets en mettant l'accent sur la forme au point de faire disparaître la couleur et la matière principale. Les assemblages de Buggenhout se développent progressivement, de l'intérieur, comme des accumulations de matériaux et de poussières. On dirait des traces archéologiques d'un futur lointain et post-industriel.
