NL – ‘Theme Song’ is een zeer typerend voorbeeld van Acconci’s ‘psycho-dramatische’ performances, waarin hij een bijna pervers intieme relatie met zijn publiek aangaat. In deze video spreekt de kunstenaar ons vanuit een persoonlijke, bijna gezellig ingerichte ruimte zeer direct en manipulatief aan. Acconci ligt op de vloer met zijn gezicht vlak voor de camera. Al rokend speelt hij ‘theme songs’ van onder meer The Doors, Bob Dylan en Van Morrison op een taperecorder af, terwijl hij zich in een verleidelijke monoloog tot ons richt. De songteksten vormen voor Acconci de aanleiding om te spelen met zijn stemintonatie. Al paaiend trekt hij ons het videowerk binnen. In deze ironische mengeling van psychologisch exhibitionisme en manipulatie benadert hij ons heel direct met ‘jij’. Hierdoor worden we onontkoombaar getuige, voyeur en zelfs medeplichtige van het werk.

In this video, the artist speaks to us very directly and manipulatively from a personal, almost cosily arranged space. Acconci lies on the floor with his face right in front of the camera. Smoking, he plays ‘theme songs’ by The Doors, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison on a tape recorder, whilst addressing us in a seductive monologue. The lyrics compel Acconci to play with his intonation. Already placatory, he draws us into the video work. In this ironic mix of psychological exhibitionism and manipulation, he addresses us head on as ‘you’. As a result we inescapably become witnesses, voyeurs, and accomplices to the work.
FR - « Theme Song » (chanson-thème) est un exemple très typique des performances « psychodramatiques » d'Acconci, dans lesquelles il entre dans une relation intime presque perverse avec son public. Dans cette vidéo, l'artiste nous parle de manière très directe et manipulatrice à partir d'un espace personnel, presque douillet. Acconci est allongé sur le sol, le visage face à la caméra. Tout en fumant, il joue sur un magnétophone des « theme songs » de The Doors, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison et d'autres, tout en s'adressant à nous dans un monologue séduisant. Pour Acconci, les paroles sont l'occasion de jouer avec son intonation vocale. En nous titillant, il nous entraîne dans l'œuvre vidéo. Dans ce mélange ironique d'exhibitionnisme psychologique et de manipulation, il nous aborde très directement avec le « tu ». Ainsi, nous devenons inévitablement témoins, voyeurs et même complices de l'œuvre.
