NL - ‘Abri pour un philanthrope’ is een persoonlijke hommage aan en imaginaire rustplaats voor twee voor de Belgische kunst belangrijke, overleden vrienden van de kunstenaar: Jan Hoet, oprichter en directeur van S.M.A.K., en schilder Karel Dierickx, van wie Van Imschoot les kreeg tijdens zijn kunstopleiding. Een open kubus opgebouwd uit oude schilderijen van Van Imschoot die hij met zwart overschilderde, vormt het centrum van deze installatie. Hij wordt geflankeerd door drie schilderijen en twee tuinstoelen. Op een van de stoelen schreef de kunstenaar een gedicht waarin hij de zee bezingt als een begraafplaats voor niet-gelovige mensen. De drie schilderijen verwierven voor de kunstenaar in de loop van hun bestaan bijzondere betekenis die met hetzij Hoet, hetzij Dierickx verband houdt. Zo slaagde Jan Hoet er in 2012 bv. in om Van Imschoots schokkende en politiek geladen schilderij waarop een man wordt geëlektrocuteerd te tonen op de Biënnale van Yinchuan in China.
ENG - ‘Abri pour un philanthrope’ is a personal tribute to an imaginary place of rest for two of the artist’s friends who were important to Belgian art and are now deceased: Jan Hoet, founder and first director of S.M.A.K., and the painter Karel Dierickx, who taught Van Imschoot at art college. The core of this installation is a cube made up of old paintings by Van Imschoot that he has painted over in black. It is flanked by three paintings and two garden chairs. On one of these chairs the painter wrote a poem in which he sings the praises of the sea as a place of burial for unbelievers. The three paintings acquired a particular significance for the artist in the course of their existence, in ways related either to Hoet or Dierickx. In 2012, for example, at the Yinchuan Biennale in China, Jan Hoet succeeded in exhibiting Van Imschoot’s shocking and politically-charged painting showing a man being electrocuted.
FR - ‘Abri pour un philanthrope’ est un hommage personnel et un lieu de repos imaginaire pour deux amis décédés de l’artiste, importants pour l’art belge: Jan Hoet, fondateur et directeur du S.M.A.K., et le peintre Karel Dierickx, que Van Imschoot a eu comme professeur pendant sa formation artistique. Un cube ouvert construit avec d’anciennes peintures de Van Imschoot qu’il a repeintes en noir, constitue le centre de cette installation. Il est flanqué de trois peintures et de deux chaises de jardin. L’artiste a écrit un poème sur une des chaises, dans lequel il célèbre la mer comme un cimetière pour les non croyants. Les trois peintures ont acquis au cours de leur existence une signification particulière pour l’artiste, qui présente un lien soit avec Hoet, soit avec Dierickx. C’est ainsi que Jan Hoet a réussi à montrer par exemple en 2012 à la Biennale de Yinchuan en Chine la peinture choquante et politiquement chargée de Van Imschoot où un homme se fait électrocuter.
