Inner Sky n°10

NL – ‘Inner Sky’ is de titel van een reeks participatieve sculpturen die Marina Abramović begin jaren ’90 creëerde. Dit werk bestaat uit een stalen driepikkel van ongeveer 2,5 meter hoog met daarop een geode, een gedeeltelijk holle steenknol binnenin begroeid met amethistkristallen. Net zoals ‘Waiting for an Idea’ maakt dit werk deel uit van Abramović’ ‘Transitory Objects’, objecten die ons stimuleren om tot een andere bewustzijnsstaat te komen, en die dus, net zoals vele van haar performances, onze actieve deelname verlangen. Net zoals voor ‘Double Edge’, voorzag Abramović ook voor dit werk een gebruiksaanwijzing. Daarin vraagt ze om onder de geode plaats te nemen en er voor ‘a limitless time’ (een onbegrensde tijd) stilstaand onze ogen te sluiten. Hierbij functioneert de sculptuur als ‘mentale architectuur’ die ons door middel van de heilzame werking van de amethistkristallen in staat stelt om een verhoogde staat van bewustzijn te bereiken. Zoals ‘Waiting for an Idea’, vormt de reeks ‘Inner Sky’ een mentale voortzetting van de fysiek grensoverschrijdende performances die Abramović samen met Ulay uitvoerde in de jaren ‘70 en ‘80.

ENG - ‘Inner Sky’ is the title of a series of participatory sculptures that Marina Abramović created in the early 90s. This work consists of a steel tripod of around 2.5 metres high, crowned with a geode and a partially hollow piece of coal with amethyst crystals growing inside. Just like ‘Waiting for an Idea’, this work is also part of Abramović’s ‘Transitory Objects’ series, objects that spur us to achieve an altered state of consciousness, and that demand our active participation, as do many of her performances. Just as with ‘Double Edge’, Abramović also provides an instruction manual for this work. In it, she asks the viewer to position themselves beneath the geode, to stand still and to close their eyes for ‘a limitless time’. The sculpture hereby acts as ‘mental architecture’ which, thanks to the healing effects of the amethyst crystals, allows us to attain a heightened state of consciousness. As with ‘Waiting for an Idea’, the ‘Inner Sky’ series serves as a mental continuation of the physical, boundary-crossing performances that Abramović staged with Ulay in the 70s and 80s.

FR - « Inner Sky » (Ciel intérieur) est le titre d'une série de sculptures participatives créées par Marina Abramović au début des années 1990. Cette œuvre est constituée d’un trépied en acier d'environ 2,5 mètres de haut surmonté d'une géode, un tubercule de pierre partiellement creux dont l'intérieur est envahi de cristaux d'améthyste. Comme « Waiting for an Idea » (En attente d’une idée), cette œuvre fait partie des « Transitory Objects » (Objets transitoires) d'Abramović, des objets qui nous encouragent à atteindre un état de conscience différent et qui, comme beaucoup de ses performances, exigent donc notre participation active. Comme pour « Double Edge » (Double tranchant), Abramović a fourni un mode d'emploi de l’œuvre. Elle nous demande de nous asseoir sous la géode et de fermer les yeux en silence pendant « a limitless time » (un temps illimité). Ce faisant, la sculpture fonctionne comme une « architecture mentale » qui nous permet d'atteindre un état de conscience accru grâce aux effets bénéfiques des cristaux d'améthyste. Comme « Waiting for an Idea », la série « Inner Sky » est une continuation mentale des performances physiquement transgressives qu'Abramović a réalisées avec Ulay dans les années 1970 et 1980.
