Waiting for an Idea

NL – ‘Waiting for an Idea’ van Marina Abramović bestaat uit een tweeluik van monumentale kleurenfoto’s. Op de ene foto zit de kunstenares met haar rug naar ons toe, op de andere ligt ze voor een muur van amethistkristallen. De foto’s documenteren twee soloperformances uit 1991, waarin Abramović respectievelijk zeven uur en één volledige dag al zittend en al liggend onbeweeglijk met deze kristallen doorbracht in de mijn van Soledade in Brazilië, waar ze werden opgedolven. Het betreft twee van Abramović’ vroegste soloperformances uit de jaren ‘90 die ze uitvoerde nadat ze haar artistieke samenwerking met Ulay in 1988 had verbroken. In die periode was de kunstenares, ook toen al lang een overtuigd praktiserend boeddhiste, geïntrigeerd geraakt door de al dan niet heilzame werking van gesteentes op ons lichaam en onze geest. Ze maakte verschillende reizen naar Brazilië, een land met een bodem rijk aan mogelijk geneeskrachtige gesteentes. Ze werkte er aan haar zogenoemde ‘Transitory Objects’ (tussenobjecten), waarbij ze zich met behulp van onder meer mineralen wou trainen om een helderdere geestestoestand te bereiken. Deze performances, door Abramović consequent ‘oefeningen’ genoemd, werden door haar onder dezelfde titel – ‘Waiting for an Idea’ – ondergebracht.

ENG - ‘Waiting for an Idea’ by Marina Abramović is a diptych of two monumental colour photographs. In one image, the artist sits with her back to us, while in the other she lies before a wall of amethyst crystals. The photographs document two solo performances from 1991. In these, Abramović spent, respectively, seven hours and a whole day sitting and lying immobile with these crystals in the Soledade mine in Brazil: the place from which they were extracted. These are two of Abramović’s earliest solo performances from the 90s which she executed after ending her artistic collaboration with Ulay in 1988. In this period, the artist, who had long been a committed, practising Buddhist, became intrigued by the effect – beneficial or otherwise – of stones on the body and mind. She made several journeys to Brazil, a country with a rich source of potentially healing stones. While there, she worked on her so-called ‘Transitory Objects’, through which she tried to obtain a state of mental clarity with the help of minerals, amongst other things. Abramović grouped these performances, which she consistently described as ‘exercises’, under the same title – ‘Waiting for an Idea’.

FR - « Waiting for an Idea » (En attente d’une idée) de Marina Abramović est un diptyque de photographies monumentales en couleur. Dans l'une d'elles, l'artiste est assise, dos à nous, tandis que dans l'autre, elle est allongée devant un mur de cristaux d'améthyste. Les photos documentent deux performances solo de 1991, au cours desquelles Abramović a passé respectivement sept heures et une journée entière avec ces cristaux, assise et allongée, immobile, dans la mine de Soledade au Brésil, où ils ont été extraits. Il s'agit de deux des premières performances solo d'Abramović datant des années 1990, qu'elle a réalisées après avoir rompu sa collaboration artistique avec Ulay en 1988. À l'époque, l'artiste, qui était déjà depuis longtemps une bouddhiste pratiquante convaincue, était intriguée par les effets bénéfiques, ou non, des roches sur notre corps et notre esprit. Elle a effectué plusieurs voyages au Brésil, un pays dont le sol est riche en roches potentiellement curatives. C'est là qu'elle a travaillé sur ses « Transitory Objects » (Objets transitoires), dans lesquels elle voulait s'entraîner à utiliser des minéraux, entre autres, pour atteindre un état d'esprit plus clair. Ces performances, qu'Abramović qualifie systématiquement d’« exercices », sont regroupées sous le même titre : « Waiting for an Idea ».
