Kobarweng or Where is Your Helicopter?

NL – Johan Grimonprez’ film ‘Kobarweng or Where Is Your Helicopter?’ deconstrueert de erfenis van een antropologisch discours, “stiefkind van het kolonialisme”, door de confrontatie te onderzoeken tussen een groep westerse wetenschappers en de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het Nieuw-Guineese hoogland. De antropologen die neerdaalden per helikopter, tot grote schrik en onthutsing van de bevolking, gooiden in één klap de geschiedenis en het wereldbeeld van de autochtonen overhoop. Centraal in ‘Kobarweng’ staat de vraag naar de notie van ‘de Ander’ – en daarmee de vraag naar wat onszelf typeert – als constructie binnen een sociale, culturele en historische context op het ogenblik dat twee verschillende culturen met elkaar in botsing komen. Grimonprez koppelt het originele documentaire-materiaal van deze eerste confrontatie aan fragmenten van de mondelinge overlevering door de autochtone bevolking vandaag.

ENG – Johan Grimonprez’s film ‘Kobarweng or Where Is Your Helicopter?’ deconstructs the legacy of an anthropological discourse, the ‘stepchild of colonialism’, by examining the confrontation between a group of Western anthropologists and the original inhabitants of a village in the remote highlands of the island of New Guinea. When the anthropologists dropped down by helicopter, to the great alarm and bewilderment of the population, that caused a crucial rupture in the natives’ history and world-view. At the heart of ‘Kobarweng‘ lies the notion of ‘the Other’ – and with it also the question of what defines ourselves – as a construction in a social, cultural and historical context at the moment when two different cultures clash. Grimonprez juxtaposes the original documentary footage of this first confrontation with accounts of villagers remembering this historical event today.

Les anthropologues débarquant en hélicoptère, à l’effroi et la stupéfaction de la population, bouleversèrent d’un coup l’histoire et la vision du monde des autochtones. La question centrale de ‘Kobarweng‘ porte sur la notion de ‘l’Autre’ – et c’est la question sur ce qui nous caractérise – comme construction dans un contexte social, culturel et historique au moment où deux cultures différentes entrent en collision. Grimonprez combine le documentaire original de cette première confrontation à des fragments de la transmission orale qui en est faite par la population autochtone d’aujourd’hui.
