NL - Postkaarten zijn dragers van informatie over plaats, tijd, bestemming en identiteit. Toch behoort het versturen ervan stilaan tot het verleden. Sinds de jaren ’80 nemen postkaarten een bijzondere plek in binnen het veelzijdige oeuvre van Peter Downsbrough. De kunstenaar ziet postkaarten als ‘ruimtes’ en brengt er lijnen, letters en woorden op aan. Zijn vernieuwende benadering van ruimte en taal verbindt zijn werk met de minimal art en de conceptuele kunst. Het gebruik van de postkaart als medium houdt verband met Downsbroughs fascinatie voor de stedelijke ruimte. Als ouderwets aandoende producten van onze toeristische blik tonen zijn kaarten bekende plekken met iconische monumenten en architectuur of meer banale, inwisselbare ‘non-plaatsen’ zoals stranden, havens of rivieren. Downsbroughs ingrepen op de gerecupereerde afbeeldingen beïnvloeden onze lezing van de afgebeelde plaatsen. Ze werken suggestief, breken de beelden open en prikkelen onze verbeelding.

ENG - Postcards are bearers of information on place, time, destination and identity. Yet sending postcards is gradually becoming a thing of the past. Since the 1980s, they have occupied a special place in the varied oeuvre of Peter Downsbrough. He sees postcards as ‘spaces’ and adds lines, letters and words to them. His innovative approach to space and language links his work to Minimal Art and Conceptual Art. The use of the postcard as a medium is related to Downsbrough’s fascination with urban space. As old-fashioned-looking products of our touristic view, his cards show well-known places with iconic monuments and architecture, or more banal, interchangeable ‘non-places’ such as beaches, harbours or rivers. Downsbrough’s changes to these recycled pictures influence our reading of the places depicted. They are evocative, break open the images and stimulate our imagination.

FR - Les cartes postales sont des supports d’informations sur le lieu, le temps, la destination et l’identité. Toutefois, leur envoi appartient peu à peu au passé. Depuis les années ’80, les cartes postales occupent une place particulière dans l’oeuvre multiple de Peter Downsbrough. L’artiste voit des cartes postales comme des ‘espaces’ et il y appose des lignes, des lettres et des mots. Son approche innovante de l’espace et du langage relie son oeuvre à l’art minimal et à l’art conceptuel. L’utilisation de la carte postale en tant que média est liée à la fascination de Downsbrough pour l’espace urbain. Produits quelque peu obsolètes de notre regard touristique, ses cartes montrent des endroits bien connus avec des monuments et de l’architecture iconiques ou des ‘non-lieux’ plus banals, échangeables, tels des plages, des ports ou des rivières. Les interventions de Downsbrough dans les reproductions récupérées influencent notre lecture des lieux reproduits. Elles ont un effet suggestif, font éclater les images et excitent notre imagination.
