Violent Incident (Man/Woman Segment)

NL – ‘Violent Incident’ verleidt en bevreemdt ons tezelfdertijd. Naumans videoinstallatie opent met een beeld van een mooi gedekte tafel, maar het vervolg haalt het romantische verwachtingspatroon dat dit beeld oproept helemaal onderuit. Op het beeldscherm worden we geconfronteerd met een hypnotiserende herhaling van geweld. Aan de basis van die verwarrende ervaring ligt een script dat Nauman schreef voor twee personages en liet uitvoeren in vier versies met wisselende verhoudingen tussen de mannelijke en de vrouwelijke rollen. Op de achtergrond horen we een man die de acteurs onophoudelijk regieaanwijzingen toeschreeuwt. De huishoudelijke ruzie wordt op zo’n droge, haast conceptuele manier gespeeld dat ze compleet ongeloofwaardig lijkt.

ENG – ‘Violent Incident’ is both seductive and alienating. Nauman’s video installation opens with the image of a beautifully laid table, but what happens next completely undermines the romantic expectation evoked by the image. On the screen, we are confronted with a hypnotic repetition of violence. Behind this confusing experience lies a script that Nauman wrote for two characters, and had performed in four versions with varying relationships between the male and female roles. In the background we hear a man who is constantly shouting stage directions at the actors. The domestic argument is performed in such a dry, almost conceptual way as to seem entirely unconvincing.

FR - ‘Violent Incident’ nous séduit et nous surprend à la fois. L’installation vidéo de Nauman s’ouvre avec l’image d’une belle table couverte, mais la suite l’emporte sur l’attente romantique que cette image évoque. Nous sommes confrontés sur l’écran avec une répétition hypnotisante de violence. La base de cette expérience troublante est un script rédigé par Nauman pour deux personnages et qu’il a fait exécuter en quatre versions avec des rapports changeants entre les rôles masculins et féminins. En arrière-plan, nous entendons un homme qui crie en permanence des instructions sur la mise en scène aux acteurs. La dispute domestique est jouée de manière tellement ennuyeuse et presque conceptuelle qu’elle semble complètement invraisemblable.
