Study for spiraling project

NL - Tekenen neemt een belangrijke plaats in binnen Bruce Naumans werkproces. Het is voor hem een eerste stap om zijn gedachten in beelden om te zetten. In het begin van zijn carrière ontstonden vooral kleine, snelle schetsen in potlood die hij gebruikte als aantekeningen. Later werden het vaker tekeningen op groot formaat, zoals hier. Met dit type tekening probeert de kunstenaar een idee te krijgen van de uiteindelijke uitvoering van een werk. De aantekeningen in potlood geven je een beeld van het denkproces dat zich in Naumans hoofd afspeelt. Deze schematische voorstudie van een sculptuur in spiraalvorm illustreert ook hoe systematisch en nauwkeurig de kunstenaar zijn installaties benadert.

ENG - Drawing occupies an important place in Bruce Nauman’s working process. For him, it is the first step towards transforming his thoughts into images. At the beginning of his career, he mainly produced small, quick pencil sketches that he used as notes. Later, these tended to become large format drawings, such as this one. With this type of drawing, the artist tried to envisage the final execution of a work. The pencil notes offer a glimpse of Nauman’s inner thought processes. This schematic preliminary study of a sculpture in spiral form also illustrates how systematically and precisely the artist approaches his installations.

FR - Le dessin occupe une place importante dans le processus de travail de Bruce Nauman. Pour lui, c'est la première étape vers la transformation de ses pensées en images. Au début de sa carrière, il réalisa principalement des petits croquis rapides au crayon qui lui servirent de notes. Plus tard, ceux-ci devinrent des dessins de grand format, comme celui-ci. Ce type de dessin permet à l'artiste de visualiser l'exécution finale d'une œuvre. Les annotations au crayon vous exposent ainsi au processus de pensée qui se déroule dans la tête de Nauman.
