NL – De installatie ‘Untitled (Four Small Animals)’ leest als een speelse knipoog aan de bekende mobielen van de Amerikaanse beeldhouwer Alexander Calder. Maar anders dan Calder gebruikte Nauman bewust anti-esthetische materialen. Hij maakte een assemblage van de rubberen mallen die taxidermisten gebruiken om dieren op te zetten. Door hoofden, ledematen en torso’s van verschillende dieren samen te brengen, verhief Nauman zich tot de schepper van vier kleine dieren met een verminkte anatomie. Of deze groteske sculptuur in tijden van genetic engineering een lach of een traan bij ons moet losmaken, blijft onuitgesproken.
ENG – The installation ‘Untitled (Four Small Animals)’ reads like a playful nod to the well-known mobiles of the American sculptor Alexander Calder. But unlike Calder, Nauman deliberately used anti-aesthetic materials. He has created an assemblage using the rubber moulds that taxidermists use to mount their work. By fusing the heads, limbs and torsos of various animals, Nauman became the creator of four small creatures with mutilated anatomical structures. Given that we live in the age of genetic engineering, it is not clear whether we should laugh or cry at the sight of this grotesque sculpture.
FR - L’installation ‘Untitled (Four Small Animals)’ se lit comme un clin d’oeil ludique aux célèbres mobiles du sculpteur américain Alexander Calder. Mais contrairement à Calder, Nauman utilisa délibérément des matériaux dépourvus d’esthétique. Il réalisa un assemblage des gabarits en caoutchouc que les taxidermistes utilisent pour empailler des animaux. En rassemblant des têtes, des membres et des torses de plusieurs animaux, Nauman se fit le créateur de quatre petits animaux à l’anatomie mutilée. Impossible de dire si cette sculpture grotesque doit nous faire rire ou pleurer en ces temps d’engineering génétique.
