NL – Bruce Naumans tekeningen zien er vaak ruw en onafgewerkt uit. Al in de jaren ‘70 begint hij met het maken van tekeningen voor tunnels. Later bouwt hij ze ook daadwerkelijk, vaak in ruwe materialen. De installaties variëren in schaal. Soms hangen ze aan het plafond, andere staan of steunen op de vloer. Nauman studeerde wiskunde op universitair niveau en blijft ook als kunstenaar gefascineerd door geometrische vergelijkingen en de relatie tussen vierkanten, cirkels en driehoeken. In zijn sculpturale werk onderzoekt de kunstenaar de relatie tussen deze vormen. Tekeningen spelen in zijn creatieproces een centrale rol: ze maken concreet wat denkbaar is. Soms zijn het kleine, snelle schetsen die dienen als aantekeningen voor sculpturen of als schema's voor films en performances. Studies op groot formaat, zoals dit werk, helpen de kunstenaar bij de uitvoering van een sculptuur, wanneer hij zich probeert voor te stellen hoe het zal worden. Vaak zijn er ook aantekeningen te lezen op zijn schetsen, zoals je kan zien in ‘Study for Spiraling Project’ (1974), een werk dat S.M.A.K. in bruikleen heeft.

ENG – Bruce Nauman’s drawings often look rough and unfinished. He started making drawings for tunnels as early as the 1970s. Later, he actually built them, often in raw materials. The installations vary in scale. Certain works hang from the ceiling, others stand or rest on the floor. Nauman studied mathematics at university level and, even as an artist, remains fascinated by geometric equations and the relationship between squares, circles and triangles. In his sculptural work, he explores the relationship between these shapes. Drawings play a central role in his creative process: they make concrete what he envisages. Sometimes they are small, quick sketches that serve as notes for sculptures or diagrams for films and performances. Large-format studies, like this work, help the artist in the execution of a sculpture, when he tries to imagine what it will become. His sketches often contain annotations as well, as you can see in ‘Study for Spiraling Project’ (1974), a work on loan to S.M.A.K.

Plus tard, il les construit pour de vrai, souvent dans des matériaux bruts. Les installations sont d’échelle variable. Parfois elles sont accrochées au plafond, parfois elles se dressent ou s’appuient sur le sol. Nauman a étudié les mathématiques à l’université. Artiste, il continue d’être fasciné par les équations géométriques et le rapport entre rectangles, cercles et triangles. Dans ses sculptures, il étudie la relation entre ces formes.
