Pepto Bismo

NL - Deze editie toont een ontwerp van het werk ‘Pepto Bismo’, een draagbaar vliegapparaat met twaalf korte, houten propellers die worden aangedreven door kleine maar krachtige motoren. Doorheen zijn artistieke loopbaan experimenteerde Panamarenko geregeld met soortgelijke tuigen. Zo ontwikkelde hij midden jaren ’80 in de Zwitserse Alpen onder de projectnaam ‘Rucksackflug’ verschillende rugzakvliegtuigen met uiteenlopende aandrijfmechanismen. Maar zijn allereerste draagbare vliegapparaat maakte de kunstenaar al in 1969 en doopte hij ‘P.A.T. I (Portable Air Transport I)’. Een belangrijk verschil is dat de piloot de ‘P.A.T. I’ al zittend bestuurt en niet op zijn rug of schouders draagt. Voor de bijna mythisch klinkende naam ‘Pepto Bismo’ inspireerde Panamarenko zich op Pepto Bismol, een Amerikaans geneesmiddel tegen misselijkheid. In 2003 werden er, in opdracht van Panamarenko’s galerist Ronny Van de Velde, zes bronzen sculpturen met de titel ‘Pepto Bismo II’ gerealiseerd. Eén van deze werken kreeg een permanente plaats op het Sint-Jansplein in Antwerpen, vlakbij de volkse wijk waar de kunstenaar jarenlang woonde en werkte. Deze prent werd uitgegeven in combinatie met het boekobject ‘Toymodel of Space’, waarin Panamarenko verschijnselen in het heelal op niet-klassiek wetenschappelijke wijze probeert te verklaren.

ENG - This edition shows a design for the work ‘Pepto Bismo’, a portable flight apparatus with twelve short, wooden propellers that are driven by small but powerful engines. Throughout his artistic career, Panamarenko regularly experimented with this kind of equipment. For example, in the Swiss Alps in the mid-eighties, he developed a series of rucksack flying machines with a range of propulsion mechanisms under the project title ‘Rucksackflug’ (‘Rucksack Flight’). However, the artist made his very first portable flying machine as early as 1969 and christened it ‘P.A.T. I (Portable Air Transport I)’. A key difference is that the pilot steers the ‘P.A.T. I’ from a seated position and does not wear it on his back or shoulders. For the almost mythical-sounding name, ‘Pepto Bismo’, Panamarenko was inspired by Pepto Bismol, an American medicine for combating nausea. In 2003, Panamarenko’s gallerist Ronny Van de Velde commissioned him to create six bronze sculptures entitled ‘Pepto Bismo II’. One of these works was given a permanent home on Sint-Jansplein in Antwerp, close to the working-class quarter in which the artist had long lived and worked. This print was published in conjunction with the book object ‘Toymodel of Space’, in which Panamarenko attempts to explain cosmic phenomena in a non-classical scientific way.

FR - Cette édition montre un projet de l’oeuvre ‘Pepto Bismo’, un appareil de vol portable composé de douze hélices courtes, actionnées par des moteurs petits, mais puissants. Au fil de sa carrière artistique, Panamarenko expérimenta régulièrement des appareils de ce type. C’est ainsi qu’il développa au milieu des années ’80 dans les Alpes suisses, sous le nom de projet ‘Rucksackflug’, plusieurs avions sacs à dos, équipés de différents mécanismes de commande. Mais l’artiste réalisa son tout premier appareil volant portable déjà en 1969, il le baptisa ‘P.A.T. I (Portable Air Transport I)’. Une différence importante est que le pilote commande le ‘P.A.T. I’ en position assise et qu’il ne le porte pas sur son dos ou ses épaules. Panamarenko s’inspira pour le nom à la résonance presque mythique ‘Pepto Bismo’ de Pepto Bismol, un médicament américain contre les nausées. En 2003, six sculptures en bronze intitulées ‘Pepto Bismo II’ ont été réalisées à la demande du galériste de Panamarenko, Ronny Van de Velde. Une de ces oeuvres s’est vu attribuer une place permanente sur la Sint-Jansplein à Anvers, près du quartier populaire où l’artiste a habité et travaillé durant de nombreuses années. Cette illustration a été éditée en combinaison avec le projet du livre ‘Toymodel of Space’, où Panamarenko tente d’expliquer les phénomènes de l’univers d’une manière scientifiquement non-classique.
