NL - Rond 1980 tastte Panamarenko de mogelijkheden af van een ruimtevlucht aangedreven door de magnetische krachtvelden tussen de hemellichamen en volgens zijn ‘Toymodel of Space’. Met dit theoretische model wou hij de werking van het heelal op zijn manier verhelderen. De kunstenaar stelde immers Einsteins complexe kwantumtheorie in vraag en wou een alternatief bieden op basis van een veel eenvoudiger mechanisch model. Bij de ontwikkeling van deze theorie nam hij niet zomaar iets aan maar onderzocht en berekende hij alles opnieuw. Zo distilleerde hij uit de wetenschap eigen afleidingen, waarbij hij bleef geloven in intuïtie als de drijvende kracht van zijn kunstenaarschap. Het ware heelal moest volgens hem veel eenvoudiger en wonderlijker zijn dan hoe Einstein het had voorgesteld. De editie ‘Toymodel of Space’ bestaat uit een boek en een video, waarin de kunstenaar vanuit de pilotenstoel van zijn ‘V1 Barada Jet’, een eenpersoonsstraalvliegtuig, spreekt over de aard van het heelal.
ENG - Around 1980, Panamarenko explored the possibilities of a space flight driven by the magnetic force fields between the celestial bodies and in accordance with his ‘Toymodel of Space’. With this theoretical model, he wanted to clarify the working of the universe in his own way. The artist questioned Einstein’s complex quantum theory and wanted to provide an alternative based on a much simpler mechanical model. In developing this theory, he did not just assimilate ideas but researched and recalculated everything afresh. In so doing, he distilled his own derivations from science while continuing to believe in intuition as the driving force of his artistic practice. In his view, the true universe had to be much simpler and more wonderful than Einstein had imagined it. The edition ‘Toymodel of Space’ consists of a book and a video, in which the artist talks about the nature of the universe from the pilot seat of his ‘V1 Barada Jet’, a single-engine jet aircraft.
FR - Aux alentours de 1980, Panamarenko explora les possibilités d'un vol dans l'espace, propulsé par les champs de force magnétique entre les corps célestes et selon son ‘Toymodel of Space’. Au moyen de ce modèle théorique, il voulut clarifier le fonctionnement de l'univers à sa manière. Questionnant la théorie quantique complexe d'Einstein, il voulut présenter une alternative basée sur un modèle mécanique bien plus simple. En développant cette théorie, il ne s’appuya pas sur des raisonnements quelconques, mais rechercha et recalcula tout à nouveau. C’est ainsi qu’il réussit à tirer ses propres conclusions quant à la science, tout en continuant à croire en l'intuition comme moteur de son travail artistique. Selon lui, le véritable univers devait être beaucoup plus simple et plus merveilleux que ce qu'Einstein avait présenté. L'édition ‘Toymodel of Space’ se compose d'un livre et d'une vidéo, dans laquelle l'artiste aborde l’origine de l'univers depuis le siège du pilote de son ‘V1 Barada Jet’, un avion monoréacteur.
