NL – ‘I Like America and America Likes Me’ was een theatraal event dat startte met Beuys’ reis van Düsseldorf naar New York in mei 1974. Beuys kwam aan op de luchthaven, van kop tot teen gewikkeld in vilt. In een ambulance werd hij naar de tentoonstellingsruimte gebracht die hij zeven dagen zou delen met een wilde coyote. Tijdens dagelijkse rituelen interageerde hij met het dier en met de objecten in de ruimte. Voor Beuys stond de coyote symbool voor de vrijheidsberoving van de Amerikaanse indianen en de relatie tussen de Verenigde Staten en Europa.
ENG – ‘I Like America and America Likes Me’ was a theatrical event that started with Beuys’s trip from Dusseldorf to New York in May 1974. Beuys arrived at the airport wrapped from head to toe in felt. In an ambulance, he was brought to the exhibition space which he would share with a wild coyote for seven days. Through daily rituals he would interact with the animal and the objects that were present in the space. To Beuys, the coyote symbolised the deprivation of freedom of the American Indians and the relationship between the United States and Europe.
FR – ‘I Like America and America Likes Me’ est un évènement théâtral qui marqua le début du voyage de Beuys de Düsseldorf à New York en mai 1974. Beuys arriva à l’aéroport enveloppé de la tête au pied dans une couverture en feutre. Arrivé à destination, il fut amené dans une ambulance à la galerie qu’il partagea pendant sept jours avec un coyote sauvage. Selon des rituels quotidiens, il entra en interaction avec l’animal et les objets dans la galerie. Le coyote était pour Beuys un symbole de la privation de liberté des Indiens d’Amérique et de la relation entre les États-Unis et l’Europe.
