NL - Naast de vier natuurelementen vormen gas, regenboogkleuren en (kunst)licht, zoals gloei- en tl-lampen, motieven binnen het oeuvre van Leo Copers. In zijn vroege werk zocht de kunstenaar naar manieren om deze soms schijnbare onverenigbaarheden met elkaar te verbinden. De spanning die ontstaat tussen polaire krachten bij de combinatie van bijvoorbeeld gas met vuur of water met elektriciteit, leidt naar een belangrijke thematische cluster in Copers’ oeuvre, namelijk gevaar, destructie en vergankelijkheid. De kunstenaar benaderde deze thematiek op een dualistische manier. Hoewel zijn werken op het eerste zicht op esthetiek lijken te zijn gericht, dragen ze, bij nader inzien, beklemmende en bedreigende situaties uit.
ENG - Motifs in the work of Leo Copers, in addition to the four natural elements, include gas, rainbow colours and artificial light, such as incandescent and fluorescent lamps. In his early work, the artist looked for ways of combining seemingly incompatible elements. The tension that arises between opposing forces, as in the combination of, for example, gas with fire, or water with electricity, leads to a major thematic cluster in Copers’ oeuvre, that of danger, destruction and transience, to which he takes a dual approach. Although at first sight his work appears to be oriented towards aesthetics, on closer examination it conveys dramatic and threatening situations.
FR - Outre les quatre éléments naturels, le gaz, les couleurs de l’arc-en-ciel et la lumière (artificielle), telles que des ampoules et des lampes TL, constituent des motifs dans l’œuvre de Leo Copers. Dans son œuvre précoce l’artiste a cherché des manières de lier ces éléments parfois incompatibles en apparence. La tension créée par les forces de la polarité en combinant, par exemple, le gaz et le feu ou l’eau et l’électricité, génère un cluster thématique important dans l’œuvre de Copers, à savoir le danger, la destruction et le caractère éphémère. L’artiste traite cette thématique de manière dualiste. Bien que ses œuvres semblent être orientées de prime abord vers l’esthétique, en y regardant de plus près, elles montrent des situations oppressantes et menaçantes.
