Refugees

Where words fall short, visual language proves its universal power. Art does not stop, not even in times of war, for even in the most tragic circumstances people still need to express themselves. With our projects, S.M.A.K. wants to contribute to the debate on and image of refugees. Our Artistic Director Philippe Van Cauteren paid a visit to three refugee camps in Northern Iraq armed with pen and paper to allow refugees to draw. He did the same thing at the reception centres in Flanders and Brussels. The results are surprising and display fragility, sometimes cruel but above all recognisable.
