NL - ‘Le manuscrit trouvé dans une bouteille’ (1974) is geïnspireerd op een verhaal uit 1833 over een schipbreuk van de Amerikaanse schrijver Edgar Allan Poe (1809-‘49). Het relaas werd overgeleverd doordat een van de bemanningsleden net vóór het schip zonk een fles met daarin het verhaal in zee had geworpen.
Het werk bestaat uit drie elementen: een wijnfles met het opschrift “Manuscript 1833”; zijdepapier met tekst die verwijst naar Poe’s verhaal maar ook naar het manuscript in de fles; en een kartonnen doos met de titel van het werk. Door het manuscript niet in de fles te stoppen maar errond te wikkelen, vervormt Broodthaers het oorspronkelijke verhaal. Zo lijkt hij aan te geven dat kunst geen absolute waarheid verkondigt en uit hij kritiek op de, voor hem, valse waarde die aan kunstwerken wordt toegekend.

The work consists of three elements: a wine bottle with the inscription “Manuscript 1833”; tissue paper with a text that refers to Poe’s story, but also to the manuscript in the bottle; and a cardboard box with the title of the work. By wrapping the manuscript around the bottle instead of putting it inside, Broodthaers ‘transforms’ the original story. In this way he indicates that art does not proclaim any absolute truth, while also criticising the false value attached to works of art.
